Pre-Finals update

Ok so I figured it was about time to do a update on how this semester has been progressing, something that I should have done probably around the half way point but never got around to.

AE 301: Going in I figured this would be the one class that I would be struggling with, however now near the end it is surprisingly one of the classes that I am doing fairly well in. Granted I spend the nights before getting both midterms back getting very little sleep but hey.

EM 340: Another classes that I was not to sure about going in, and ironically have done well in. Right now I just need to do well on the final to seal the deal.

EM 341: Lab for 340, not much to say, other then the equipment we have sucks.

PHYS 197: Going in I was expecting this to be one of my stronger classes, that was until the prof. dropped the bomb that we would get no form of formal sheet or note card with formulas, and oh ya he will also be testing us on the previous two classes material. In short he has made it so that by the time we take the final we have to literally memorize a year and a half's worth of physics. The only thing that can right now save me is the fact that he is going to curve the final grade, and considering the average right now stads at a 1.5, with a SD of .56 I think I might be able to pull a pass out.

EE 204: Another class I was worried about, but this time those worries were justified. Unfortunately I managed to botch two of the three tests, mainly because of really stupid ass mistakes. So right now I am going to try talking to the prof tomorrow to see if i can get a few points back on the last one, and am just going to have to kick ass on the final.

EM 351: This has been a fairly straight forward class, with a great prof. I have no complaints with this class.

Time for some politics

OK since it is that time again, the time where we step up and exercise our democratic rights and vote, I felt that I should jump into the fray and speak up on my opinions of the issues on the ballot this year.

Prop 1A: Up until this semester I was depending entirely on the coaster to get me two and from school. I felt that it was for the most part a fairly great way to get to and from San Diego. That being said I have to support this as a high speed rail would really help with the commute on the 5, as fewer people will be driving north and south.

Prop 2: Yes, as I support stuff that helps the animals.

Prop 3: Yes, better hospitals are always a good thing.

Prop 4: No, while I agree with the overall idea of this proposition, I can not agree with it because of the risk of abusive parents. If they were to add a clause to it that could potentially protect from potential abuse repercussions then I would vote for it.

Prop 5: Yes, I think that the pros and cons balance out pretty well on this one and I can agree with the idea of programs to help people.

Prop 6: Yes, criminal justice needs to be well funded, especially in these troubling financial times.

Prop 7: No, while I don’t like being someone to go with the crowd for the sake of going with the crowd, I have to on this one as it is really poorly written.

Prop 8: No, First off it is simply wrong to deny anyone basic human rights for any reason. Second off, there is this little thing called the 14th amendment, which VERY clearly guaranties equal protection under the law, which means if we allow rights to one group we have to allow it to all. Period. It simply sickens me that we still live in a country where people are discriminated over the dumbest things. Honestly how does a gay couple being able to marry effect you. You want to know the honest truth? It doesn’t, so how about instead of spending so much time and money getting into other people’s lives and why don’t you try and see if you can get your head out of your own ass’.

Prop 9: Yes, as victims should have input into the process to decide if a criminal should be preleased.

Prop 10: Yes, as I do support funding and application of alternative fuel technology.

Prop 11: No, as we already have one body drawing district lines why do we need another?

Prop 12: Yes, I support our vets fully and like to help however possible.

Prop A: No, now don’t get me wrong I am all for improved fire protection, however I feel that this prop just doesn’t do it.

President: McCain, frankly I can not in good conscience vote for Obama. First off his idea of raising taxes, on any one, in this time of extreme financial turmoil is nothing short of stupidly. The last time we had a president who did that we ended up in the great depressions, and since I don’t think there is going to be another world war to get us out of another depression it is idiotic to even head in that direction. His idea of time tables out of Iraq is equally moronic, as the extremists need only wait until we leave to tear that country apart and the blood that is spilled in that destruction will be on our hands and we will HAVE TO go back and put more American lives in harms way. Additionally is calls to talk directly with Ahmanutjob, someone who has repeatedly said that they will wipe Israel off the map, is something you simply don’t do. You do not sit down and have tea and small talk with a despot. The fact that his administration has repeatedly defied international mandates only goes to very blatantly show that their nuclear program is not only not benign as they have said it is but, that they fully plan to use any nuclear weapons they develop. Because of this I fully support a war with Iran, both to ensure the safety of the region and the world at large, but also because the world needs to wake up and relies that if humanity is to survive then we need to be united under 1 banner, we need to bring together the collect strengths of the human race to deal with the problems that we face. Sorry to diverge a bit but I needed to get that out. Additionally I can not vote for Obama as all of his economic plans are nothing short of socialism. I mean did we not spend 50 years with the threat of nuclear annihilation defeating this shit.

So ya I know that I am probably going to get flamed to hell for this but I need to say what I think.

Slight change of plans

OK so today I dropped the Pilot Training course that I was going to take this summer. I did this mainly because of time concerns. This is because one of the things the teacher said on the first night that it would be a good idea to be taking the flying aspect of flight training concurrently to the ground schooling. Since I am already going to be fairly occupied with stuff this summer it makes trying to take the flying now a bit hard. In addition, I already know there is no way in hell I am probably going to have time next semester to do it, even with my Wednesdays and Fridays free. Spring I really cant make estimates on yet, and I defiantly cant next summer as I HAVE to get a job as I HAVE to move out for my last year of school. So ya, I’m kinda down about this turn of events as I really wanted to take this course. Unfortunately for now at least that is not to be. I am still taking the digital photograph course I signed up for so no change there.

As for my summer so far, it’s been pretty uneventful. Did go down to the Air and Space museum this past weekend to see an interesting exhibit on the history of Star Trek, which was pretty cool. Now I just need to finally find some time to go down to the Midway and ill be pretty well set as far as museum attendance in SD. I guess that’s it for now.

Spring Semester Review and Summer Plans

Woot so I am finally done with school for this semester. This was in many ways one of the more enjoyable semesters that I have had. I had some really interesting classes, and had a great time taking them. So any way here is the break down.

AE 320 AEROSPACE FLIGHT MECHANIC: I was expecting this course to be very difficult, as it is one of my first major classes, and it is technically a course in rocket science. To my surprise the majority of it was all just basic plug and chug. I also like the pace of this course, we would cover a chapter, have a week to do the homework and then have a test after every two chapters. So at the end of the semester this was one of my more liked courses. Already got the grade back on this one and was surprised that I got a B+, must have had something to do with the final being worth 50% of our grade, and me kicking ass on it.

ASTR 310 Astrobiology: This course I took because the description of it in the course ledger sounded interesting so I figured why not. That and I needed another class to fill my schedule. Any way I like this course, we covered various aspects of astronomy and some biology. It was also interesting to look at the different data that had been collected on planets and moons in our own system and the high likely hood of us finding life here.

ENGL 401 CHILDHOOD'S LITERATURE: Took this as I needed a course, this fit in my schedule, and it covered an upper division GE requirement. I expected this course to be fairly easy going in, and even more when I got the book list and saw a lot of picture books and the like. Overall this was my main slack course, even though we had to write 5 essays over the course of the semester.

ISCOR 320 INT SECURITY NUCLEAR AGE: Another upper GE course I took this semester. This was another slack course as we had no real homework for it. All we had to do for it was three tests, covering different sections of the course, and a simulation exercise as different groups. My group was the US, and we basically had the EU as our own personal bitch. At the same time the Iran group did a good job of representing Iran I think as that was a hard country to do, as you are essentially being the bad guy. I was surprised though by one of Syria’s group member damn near got tossed out of the final debate we had.

PHYS 196 Physics II: Fairly straight forward course in physics. I was fortunate enough to pull off two perfect scores back to back on the first two tests. Third got an 8.9 which was not to bad I thought. Fourth I bombed hard, though I expected that as I really did not study that much and sort of just said fuck it. Last test though I did pretty decent, and since our lowest got drop and replaced with our average test score managed to get a grade equivalent to a C+ even before the final. So I’m expecting a B, but could get as high as an A.

So now on to what I have planed for summer break. Right now I am planning on taking two classes over at Palomar, a digital photo course and pilot ground school. Photo course I had originally planed to take last summer, but there was not enough time between the swim class I was taking and the photo course to change, and get over to the class. Also I really felt the course was a little over my head, however I recently found a nice photo primer done by a model building buddy of mine that basically was a good intro into photography and how to work a camera and what stuff does what. So expect me to have my camera on me for most of the summer as you never know when a good shot is going to pop up. As for the ground school I would hope that is pretty self explanatory as to why I am taking it, however just to be sure. I am taking it as I want to get a pilots license. I think it will be a good thing to have on a resume, and it could potentially help get me a job as a test pilot or something along those lines.

The other major summer plan is Anime Expo and Comic Con. Again I am planning on doing the four and five day full smash for both of them again this year. Hopefully this year I can go to Comic Con and not be completely out of it due to a cold, which really sucked last year. As for AX, currently I am planning on driving as when I am expecting us to be leaving the con at night will be later then the trains run, and because I don’t know about reliable transport from the station to the con. The other reason is the stuff issue, as I know everyone likes having a place to stash stuff when they want to go eat and such or they don’t want to carry it any more. So based on my calculations I believe I can get two trips up to LA and back on one tank of gas, with a little wiggle room, about 3 gallons worth. The only day I see us potentially getting stuck in traffic is the first day going up, Friday I believe, and the last day going, the following Monday. Now Comic Con I expect to be the same as every year so no worries there.

So I think that is it for now, I hope to post back again before the cons but you never know.

End of first week

Ok so a little update after my first week of the new semester. Overall I like the classes that I am taking this semester. Even more important my schedule is such that I am not going to kill myself getting up at the ass crack of dawn all the time like I was last semester. Any way lets get down to the nitty gritty of the classes that I am taking.

AE 320: I am still kind of on the fence with this class. Thus far it has met twice and even though it is the same prof. that I had for ENGR 280, which I thought he was a horrible prof, he hasn’t done that bad thus far. Then again it is only the first week of class so I still really can make any true judgment calls as to how good a prof he is at this subject.

ASTR 310: This class I do not foresee being that difficult so long as i keep up with the readings. This is mainly due to the fact a lot of this stuff I already know about from ASTR 101.

ENGL 401: Again another class that should be no prob so long as i do the readings. Also is nice since it only meets twice a week.

ISCOR 320: Another class with mainly readings, but the readings have thus far been very interesting, though the only thing I see potentially being a problem will be the simulation that we have to do at the end of the semester from the point of view of some group that we will be assigned later. However I am hopeful that my l33t role-play skills will help.

PHYS 196: For this I just need to understand the material, understand the practice problems, and kick ass on the tests.

So I am looking forward to a moderate difficult semester this time around. Granted I have a lot of reading to do, but I don’t see that as being a problem. The biggest thing this semester I really like however is my schedule, three mornings a week I get to sleep in till 7, which makes me very happy.

Also as a little side note I started working on the game that I have been planning to run again, adding more to the plot. I really would like to finish the plot at some point, even if the group never plays it I want to finish it. Hell I might even actually write some time of story using what characters that did get made during the one winter break when I tried to start.

End of another break

So another break from school has come and gone once again. While I am in no way complaining about the length, as everyone else that I know who is still in school has been back for 2 weeks now, it is still sad that it is over. Thankfully I used this time to the fullest to recuperate from a long and arduous semester. Any way I spent the majority of this break, or at the very least a good couple of weeks, just hanging out with friends to all hours of the night. Which was extremely fun, even more so since I found out that I have not had a curfew since I turned 21. While on the topic of spending time with friends, New Years was a blast. We spend the majority of the night watching Twilight Zone, which is kind of an odd thing to be having a marathon off on New Years, but it was still good. We also celebrated the New Year with a bang, literally, as we had confetti poppers which we all set off at midnight. That night was also the first night I had my first "real" drink, which was alright, kind of wished we had done more drinking that night other than one drink but eh. After new years things quieted down pretty fast as a lot of people got busy with school again and at the very least I haven’t herd too much from people about group events. But ya basically after that I had nothing but alone time for myself, which I am kind of glad that I did get. While it is loads of fun to hang out with everyone all the time, but I do like my alone time to work on stuff here at home.

One of the very big things that I did do in the few weeks after everyone went back to school and such was clean off the little couch in my bonus room so that it can be used by people and not be covered in stuff, which was almost entirely comprised of fluff material. So that was my really big personal accomplishment for the break and am really proud of it. In addition to that I played a hell of a lot of FFXII, shakes fist at wood for getting me back into playing it. I basically went from about 1/3 way through the game to basically the very end, all i have to do now is go fight the final boss and I’m done. Granted however it is a final fantasy game so there are a lot of side quests and the like that I need to finish up still. The other major thing that I did during the break was finish up one of my Gundam models, finally after about 6 months in the works, which can be seen over on my deviant art site. The main reason this model took so long was because of school and how my schedule was last semester. I also finally wet decaled my first model, which now only needs some weathering and will be finished as well.

Another thing that I did over this break, which I truthfully was a little surprised myself, was that I watched a crap load of anime. In total I managed to watch all of Blue Drop, Ikkitousen, Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny, Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny Hot Springs OVA, and Lucky Star. I also finished up Genshiken 2, Rozen Maiden and Sky Girls. Additionally I started two new series, Spice and Wolf, and Starship Troopers, yes there is an anime and it is more like the book then the movie was. What really surprised me about this was the fact that I watched all of this anime in such a short period of time. I honestly don’t think that I watched even half of what I watched this break in all of summer break. The other thing that surprised me was how much space on my computer allot of this anime occupies, about 198 GB of a 250 GB hard drive. So one of the big things that I am hoping for in the new year is that a lot of the series that I have been following or have already finished get licensed here in the states and get released, as I would really like to delete some of these off my hard drive as they are taking up space.

So now on to this coming school semester. This semester I am taking 5 classes for a total of 15 units. Those classes are:

AE 320: Aerospace Flight Mechanic
ASTR 310: Astrobiology
ENGL 401: Childhood’s Literature
ISCOR 320: Int Security Nuclear Age
PHYS 196: Principles Of Physics II

Now the first class I am really concerned with as it is being done by the same prof. that I had for ENGR 280, the class that I had to retake. So I am hoping that this class will not be as bad, but I am already expecting the worst. The Astrobiology class looks really interesting, and I am hoping to have a lot of fun it. The English class looks like it is going to be very straight forward so long as I do all of the readings. The ISCOR class I have no real idea as to what to expect so I guess I will find out when I get there tomorrow. Finally I already have a good idea what to expect in the physics class, so I just need to get a good prof this time around and not one that basically chucks us into the physics ocean and tells us to start swimming. So overall I believe that this semester is going to be very interesting. I am just really glad that this break has turned out to be very restful and rejuvenating for me, as that is exactly what you need both after a hard semester and right before another long and potentially equally challenging one. The one thing I do like about this semester's schedule is that all of my classes are not spread out and I only need to go in for a few hours and then I get to come home pretty early in the day.

So I will try to post later this week once I have and idea of what these classes are going to be like.
